VICTORY OF CEYLON HISTORY

Family Tradition

Our family business, which began with our ancestor Alagiyawanna Don Louis Mendis Appuhamy in the 1880s, has been selling tea and spices locally and internationally for many years. During the Victorian era, the Governor of Ceylon recognized Appuhamy as a pioneer in the industry for his efforts in planting and trading these products. The business has undergone some generational skips, but the current generation takes pride in carrying forward the legacy of selling premium spices and tea. We are committed to maintaining the values and traditions laid down by our forefathers, and at the same time, we are open to embracing modern market trends and technologies to ensure the longevity of the business

True Ceylon Cinnamon

True Ceylon Cinnamon

Cinnamon is a spice that has been used for centuries, both for its culinary and medicinal properties. Ceylon cinnamon, also known as “true cinnamon,” is a type of cinnamon that is native to Sri Lanka (formerly known as Ceylon). Here’s a brief history of Ceylon cinnamon:

The use of cinnamon can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where it was used in embalming and as a perfuming agent. It was also mentioned in the Bible as an ingredient in holy anointing oil.

In the Middle Ages, cinnamon was a valuable commodity and was traded along the spice routes from Asia to Europe. It was considered a luxury item and was used to flavor food, as well as to treat various ailments.

In the early 16th century, the Portuguese arrived in Sri Lanka and took control of the cinnamon trade. They established a monopoly on the cinnamon trade and taxed the cinnamon harvest heavily.

In the 17th century, the Dutch ousted the Portuguese and took control of Sri Lanka. They continued to monopolize the cinnamon trade and even went as far as to uproot all cinnamon trees outside their control in order to maintain their monopoly.

In the 19th century, the British took control of Sri Lanka and abolished the Dutch monopoly on cinnamon. Cinnamon cultivation was encouraged, and it became a major export crop for the country.
